Tess

It was late, about 2 AM, and I was still at O’Malley’s helping Harry and Emma clear up. Jerry’s wake had been a lively affair with his friends and family really celebrating Jerry’s life—it had been quite the sight. As a result, the stragglers had only just left.

I offered to help tidy up. Both Emma and Harry said they were coming in tomorrow to give the place a really good clean, so it was just a case of stacking all the glasses in the sink and getting rid of the leftover food.

I’d had a few drinks, but nowhere near enough to dull the pain that had taken root in my chest. Cutting Lucifer loose had torn me up inside, and I felt empty, but today hadn’t been about me and my drama, so I put a lid on it, pushed it down, suppressed it. Emma had repeatedly asked what was wrong, but I managed to put her off; I couldn’t deal with that conversation right now.

The three of us turned everything off and made our way out of the bar, locking the place up behind us. I hugged the pair and told them not to worry, that I’d be fine getting home alone. I knew I wasn’t alone though, as I caught a glimpse of Conrath lurking in one of the doorways. There would be others, though I couldn’t tell where they were.

“Okay, babe, take care. Text me when you get home. Promise?” Emma said, holding her pinky out to me.

“Promise,” I echoed as I grabbed her finger with my own. “See you, Harry. Take care.” He nodded at me, and then the pair headed off in the opposite direction.

As I began the short walk back to my condo, I felt Conrath’s presence next to me.

“How are you doing?” he asked gently.

“It’s been a really shitty day, and I just want to go home and curl up in bed,” I said, hugging my coat around myself.

“I heard what happened,” he said as he cast a sidewards glance at me. “Try to be patient. This is all very new to him. But it’s clear he cares deeply for you. I’ve never seen him like this.”

I stopped in my tracks and glared at him. “Should I excuse all of his bad behaviour just because he’s “never done this before?” I don’t think so.”

“No, you absolutely shouldn’t, and I agree he’s not being fair. It’s just he’s trying with you. He really is. Just… try and remember that,” he said as he once more set off towards my building. I sighed and quickly followed, catching up to walk alongside him.

Have I been too harsh on him? I didn’t think so, but the thought of not being with him hurt more than everything that had happened between us. As much as it pained me to admit it, I cared for him, and deep down I wanted to be with him—whether he was the Devil or not.

I opened the door to my building, and we walked through, making our way to the elevator.
