It was late, about 2 AM, and I was still at OâMalleyâs helping Harry and Emma clear up. Jerryâs wake had been a lively affair with his friends and family really celebrating Jerryâs lifeâit had been quite the sight. As a result, the stragglers had only just left.
I offered to help tidy up. Both Emma and Harry said they were coming in tomorrow to give the place a really good clean, so it was just a case of stacking all the glasses in the sink and getting rid of the leftover food.
Iâd had a few drinks, but nowhere near enough to dull the pain that had taken root in my chest. Cutting Lucifer loose had torn me up inside, and I felt empty, but today hadnât been about me and my drama, so I put a lid on it, pushed it down, suppressed it. Emma had repeatedly asked what was wrong, but I managed to put her off; I couldnât deal with that conversation right now.
The three of us turned everything off and made our way out of the bar, locking the place up behind us. I hugged the pair and told them not to worry, that Iâd be fine getting home alone. I knew I wasnât alone though, as I caught a glimpse of Conrath lurking in one of the doorways. There would be others, though I couldnât tell where they were.
âOkay, babe, take care. Text me when you get home. Promise?â Emma said, holding her pinky out to me.
âPromise,â I echoed as I grabbed her finger with my own. âSee you, Harry. Take care.â He nodded at me, and then the pair headed off in the opposite direction.
As I began the short walk back to my condo, I felt Conrathâs presence next to me.
âHow are you doing?â he asked gently.
âItâs been a really shitty day, and I just want to go home and curl up in bed,â I said, hugging my coat around myself.
âI heard what happened,â he said as he cast a sidewards glance at me. âTry to be patient. This is all very new to him. But itâs clear he cares deeply for you. Iâve never seen him like this.â
I stopped in my tracks and glared at him. âShould I excuse all of his bad behaviour just because heâs ânever done this before?â I donât think so.â
âNo, you absolutely shouldnât, and I agree heâs not being fair. Itâs just heâs trying with you. He really is. Just⦠try and remember that,â he said as he once more set off towards my building. I sighed and quickly followed, catching up to walk alongside him.
Have I been too harsh on him? I didnât think so, but the thought of not being with him hurt more than everything that had happened between us. As much as it pained me to admit it, I cared for him, and deep down I wanted to be with himâwhether he was the Devil or not.
I opened the door to my building, and we walked through, making our way to the elevator.
